Youth Birder and Wildlife Club

We have formed a youth birder and wildlife club at the Peaceful Nature Wildlife Reserve made up of children and youth from the community including children whose families live next to the reserve.  The club will learn about birds, wildlife and agroecology and the importance of protecting natural resources.  The club will be working with local schools on environmental education through programs from the Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Education.  We will also be hosting agroecology workshops from the Nicaragua Institute of Agricultural Technology.

The youth bird club has been meeting twice a month. The club has participated in a number of projects and activities. The group constructed an insect hotel to provide refuge, shelter and nesting areas for insects. The insects provide food for birds and other animals. Insect hotels provide valuable housing for beneficial insects, encourage insect pollination, improve soil quality, increase ecosystem diversity, and reduce populations of detrimental insects. The club also recently participated in Global Big Day an international bird watching day, by taking a birdwatching and wildlife tour of three local farms. Upcoming projects will be planting a flower garden to attract birds, painting a mural and building birdhouses.
