La Paz is part of an area called the “Golden Triangle”, because of its rich, agricultural soil. The Golden Triangle is a critical area, it recharges aquifers and rivers, is known for some of Nicaragua’s richest agricultural land, and also serves as a biological channel for many tropical birds. Deforestation due to forestry, agricultural expansion, and firewood consumption has severely reduced the forest coverage within the Golden Triangle. This has resulted in loss of habitat for birds and other animals, loss of top soil, and contamination of aquifers.

The Reforestation, soil preservation, and forest conservation carried out by Compas de Nicaragua are all important elements for the protection of the diverse and fragile Golden Triangle Region. These are also important elements for sustainable development and the improvement of the lives of the farming families who live there.
