Compas started coffee tree nurseries in the backyards of the homes of some of the farmers and host families as part of the reforestation project. The idea was to use our own coffee beans (seeds) to create tree nurseries that the farmers would care for in their backyards. Then, at the start of the rainy season, instead of purchasing the trees from a commercial tree nursery, we would buy them from the farmers themselves so that they can receive the profits. This turned out to be a great idea! The farmers took very good care of the trees, and for their labor, each farmer was able to receive $360 for their portion of the coffee trees. Given the current crisis in Nicaragua, this unexpected income was much needed for the farming families.
Now that the rains have begun, the farmers are finishing up the last of the planting! Here are some pictures of some of the farmers receiving their trees.
Special thanks to the LeBaron Foundation for their continued support of this project!
