Gray Water Filtration Systems

Compas has been working with CIPRES to install gray water systems in La Primavera through the Women in Action project.  The systems consist of a 3 inch PVC tube with small holes on each side that is buried in a small ditch filled with crushed rock.  The water from sinks and showers is then drained underground and filtered through the crushed rocks.  These inexpensive and easy to assemble systems eliminate standing gray water in backyards and streets.

Last year, Compas installed 5 gray water systems that eliminate shower and sink water.

Goals of the project:

         -Eliminate standing gray water

-Reduce common sicknesses such as malaria, dengue fever and skin infections

         -Produce irrigated gardens

         -Improve hygiene

-Create more healthy and beautiful backyards

Over the next two years, Compas hopes to install 50 gray water systems in La Primavera.  This would comprise all of the households within the La Primavera settlement and therefore eliminate all gray water.
